DOT Public Information Meeting Thursday, September 5th

As a cyclist (and past recent member of SBRA ) I wanted to let you know about a planned project that will create a dangerous situation for SBRA along a very popular cycling route.

The D.O.T. is planning entrance and exit ramps on and off Sunrise Highway onto Barnes road in Moriches. As you are aware Barnes Road is a winding, uneven farm road with very slight if any shoulders and no sidewalks for pedestrians. The planned expansion will place a vast amount of traffic onto this roadway with no improvements to Barnes Road to support the project. East and West Corridors are the life blood of Long Island with the need for evacuation routes for areas such as Mastic Beach Peninsula requiring an unimpeded Route (Bridge over RxR tracks) for a South / North corridor. The proposed project addresses neither but will make Barnes Road, a roadway that already sees vehicles averaging 40 to 50 mph on a 25 to 30 mph posted roadway into a death trap. As a First Responder in this Community I would place this section of roadway amongst the top few most dangerous for accidents.

I’m writing this message and sending along an attachment to implore SBRA members to attend the planned meeting on September 5th (5-8pm) @ Mastic Fire Department to let the concerns of our cycling community be heard.

    Sincerely,
    Michael J. Buckheit
