Fall foliage should be at its peak for this tour along the Nissequogue River, Short Beach, Long Beach, and Harbor Road, before heading through Stony Brook Village and out to Old Field Point. These are some of the prettiest back roads in Suffolk.
This is a very hilly route, so I've listed it as a B- ride. Nobody gets dropped, everybody gets plenty of exercise.
Meet at the Smithtown Branch Shopping Center (LA Fitness, former Waldbaums).
Lunch will be at Fratelli's Deli on the return trip from Old Field.
**UPDATE – 10/24/2014 – 8:15AM – The ride is BACK ON. Bernie has graciously volunteered to do this ride for me. Thanks Bernie!!**
**UPDATE – 10/23/2014 – 7:40Pm – I’m really sorry I have to cancel the ride since you know how I hate doing that. I just received a call from my contractor, he will be pouring concrete on Saturday morning and I must be there. I apologize for any inconvenience. See you on Sunday.**
It’s off to Manorville for a change. The average pace for the ride will be between 14.8 to 15.0 mph. perhaps a tad higher depending on the wind direction and other conditions. Naturally, the road speed will be higher (15 -17 mph.) to produce the average. A rest/ food stop at Mc Donald’s or the bagel shop is on the schedule. There will be some leg stretches along the way for those who feel the need.
Please check the ride calendar for any weather, or last minute cancellations which will be posted no later than 7:30AM if necessary. My cell number is 631.484.3490; call anytime if you have questions about the ride or need directions to the start.
Join Linda Kirk and me for a combined bike-hike ride. We'll start with a leisurely 19 mile ride from Bellport to the Wertheim Wildlife Preserve located on Smith Rd. in Mastic. We'll lock up our bikes at the visitor's center and do a 2-3 mile hike on the trails overlooking the Carmans River. Bring lunch or a snack to be eaten while we're in the preserve. We'll then get back on our bikes and ride 5 miles to Bellport. Remember to bring a lock. Call Dick at 631 846-7825 if you have any questions.
We will ride out the Smiths point today where will be take a break and then head back. Bring a lite snack or you can stop at the 7 11 on the way to the beach. The group stays together ! Pace will be in the high B range.
