Changing it up today. I am posting this as a B/b+ but the route has alot of cross streets which we will have to stop at so the average will most likely not reflect the effort of the ride. This is more of a scenic ride to enjoy and not a ride to see how fast you can go. Our stop will be at the Sunshine Mall. Park in the first lot as you come into the park by the baseball field. Text if you are coming. 631-747-3464

We will ride around the scenic roads of Oakdale, a unique community steeped in Vanderbilt History.Shortly after crossing a wooden footbridge, we'll be taking our break on the riverside steps of Idle Hour, the former William K. Vanderbilt Estate. Unfortunately, it is the now defunct Dowling College and falling into disrepair. Continuing with the theme of Vanderbilt history we will be heading into the mews, also once part of the Vanderbilt Estate. The mews is such a fascinating pocket of History & Architecture that we will be sure to ride each and every road. Please bring water, spare tube, and a snack if you wish, to enjoy riverside. Alright so it’s ok to take it up a notch if it feels effortless like a tail wind on Dune Rd
It’s not appropriate to take a hard pull up a hill into the wind. We do aim to keep the group together. If a rogue rider is really struggling there is always Dan’s ride to drop back to. Please don’t take pulls that splinter the group.
If you were the one that pulled too hard it would be good for it to be your responsibility to drag those dropped bodies back to the group.
Last week we had a 1/2 dozen riders disconnect from the group that may have been avoided.
Off to Briermere's, with an outdoor picnic area as well as a variety of individual baked goods as well as pies. If 4 or more riders are interested in sharing a pie, we can do that, and share the cost. We pass a Bison farm on the way, if they are in a field near the road, we will stop for a quick look. Ten miles of this ride are on a paved bike trail. Briermere's has indoor restrooms. Check the ride calendar the day of the ride for changes, which would be posted by 07:00am.
Come join me for an 8:15 B/B+ ride up to Briermere and a slice of pie.
We will average between 16 to 17, with cruising between 18 to 20 to get that average.
I will wait-up whenever someone falls behind. No one will be dropped. If you want to join me please text me on my cell, 631-655-7801. Please provide your name, SBRA, cell, and emergency numbers. Once accepted onto the ride if you need to cancel for any reason please text me as early as possible.
Same old route from Sayville to Babylon, with lots of traffic lights - so this will be a Local train, not the Express. Let's plan on keeping everyone together: we'll take it easy leaving each station, waiting for everyone to get up to speed before putting on the coals! Also, let's soft pedal after the rises, so everyone can catch back up; show some consideration for the Lanterne Rouge! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanterne_rouge
There will be a short stop at the Babylon docks, before we turn around and hit the track homeward.
Today's’ route to Great River will change up a bit towards the end of the ride - if the wind is in our favor; making this route pretty flat except for 2 overpasses. We ride the flat south shore of Long Island and take an extremely indirect, scenic, fun meandering route to Heckscher State Park that includes a bunch of turns and dead ends by water The ride back is much straighter and on more active roads. We will utilize a picnic area at Hecksher for a short picnic lunch break.
The ride is around 41 flat miles designed to allow those looking to stretch their legs to somewhat longer distances to start that stretch and begin preparation for the Seacoast Century or similar rides.
Please bring your lunch, snacks and sufficient hydration, as it is very unlikely that we will stop to pick up food. Be sure to have snacks, since we won't get to picnic in Hecksher until late in the ride. Also bring an upbeat attitude ready to explore.
