Although a Road Bike is suggested for Road Bike Type rides it is not required. Hybrid and mountain bikes can be used on these rides as well provided you are comfortable with the pace outline in the Posted Ride. Join us for the ... SBRA Century/Metric Century Ride 2023 Saturday, June 10, 2023
The rides will leave from Calverton and go out to Orient and back. There will be Century and Metric Century ride distance options. Check the ride calendar for all available rides posted by the ride leaders.
There will be minimal sag support (may be only 1 vehicle). Bring your own food and drinks as there will be no official rest stops. No registration is required. This is a very casual "let's do a century" for SBRA members.
UPDATE: It looks like we will have favorable weather for the Century, and the air quality is improving! SO, the Century is a go for now, but please check the SBRA Calendar for any changes!
Any questions, or if you want to let us know you'll be riding; please leave a comment to this post!
The slogan for the day: To finish first, first you must finish!
Why settle for nothing less than the full century, the 100 miles, the big ride (Sorry Kevin), the long run! https://youtu.be/884VNMgJxpA
It's Orient Point or bust!
We'll keep an endurance pace throughout this paceline ride. We'll ride out East through Riverhead, Mattituck, Cutchogue - all along Peconic Bay. Then it's along the Sound eventually reaching Orient Beach State Park. On the return we will ride through Greenport, then to Cutchogue, Mattituck and Riverhead and back through Manorville to the finish.
There will be a couple of stops on the way out to Orient Point and on the return, so we can keep everyone together and avoid the dreaded Bonk, or even worse leg cramps! (Remember to hydrate and fuel-up at every stop, so you'll have the energy to finish the ride and not bonk!). We will have a S.A.G. vehicle with us, just in case!
The pace will be a high B/B+ outbound with a tailwind and probably slower on the return, when tired legs meet the headwinds of the North Fork.
We hope to see you on the ride!
Let's Go!
Now, if we could only find some Thunderbird for the post ride celebration!
Orient Point Century ride at a moderate B pace, consistent with the training pace on Joe D's rides for the past month. Thanks to Joe D. for leading all the training rides.
Group will stay together, nobody gets dropped, and we'll have snack breaks on the way out and back, as well as a lunch stop mid-ride.
This is a very scenic ride with about 1,900 ft of climbing. I am planning to make 3 stops along the way (Mattituck, Orient and Cutchogue) for hydration, restrooms and lunch but this may change as "nature" calls. Avg speed should be on the low to mid point of the 17-18 mph range with max cruising speed of 21, but this is always subject to change based on weather conditions.
Please pack proper hydration (at least 2 water bottles), food to eat along the way (Cliff Bars, trail mix, GU packs, etc), some $$ for lunch and a cell phone.
I will try to keep the group together and my intent is not to drop anyone; however, based on past experience, some riders may not be able to finish the full century for various reasons (muscle cramping, heat exhaustion, mechanical issues, etc.). In this case, please have a back-up plan to get yourself home (spouse, friend or Uber).
If anyone has questions, please call or txt me (347-922-3824).
A steady 100 miles out to Orient Point. Depending on the group and wind we may possibly tip into the A range. We will stop briefly at the end of Nassau Point but will stop again to refuel at 7-11 in Greenport. Please bring at least 2 bottles of hydration and some snacks. We also could stop at the Deli in Southold if needed on the return. Leaving at 7:30 am so get there early. Please download and review the route, hope to see you there.
For those who aren't doing a Century or Half-Century ride, join me for this morning ride from SAYVILLE to ?? This will be an easy C ride and will average 11.4 - 11.9.
The exact route will be determined at the start. Wherever we go there will be a bathroom stop & a food break. Since nothing is certain until we start, there will not be a cue sheet for this ride.
NOTE: I am limiting the number of riders on my rides, so you must text me with your name, SBRA Member Number, and Emergency Contact Phone Number if you want to ride, I will return the text: YES, you have a spot; NO, ride is filled. CELL #: 631-523-2129.
For this Flat ride the Average speed is 11.5-12.5mph depending on riders, wind, tide, position of moon and leaders disposition with a distance of 18-23 miles. Nobody gets left behind and newbies always welcome and well taken care of. Any cancellation will be before 8:30am. No need to text me.
Park in south side lot across from RR station.
Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the ride start, to allow enough time for me to get everyone signed in and to "get yourself" ready.
