About SBRAThe Suffolk Bicycle Riders Association, Long Island's largest cycling club, invites you to join us on a variety of rides and events. Organized in 1977, we are a club made up of all ages and cycling abilities. Active members enjoy riding together year round in a relaxed and friendly group atmosphere. Our rides range from short, easy trips for beginners, to moderately-paced tours with snack breaks, to fast, challenging rides for the more competitive minded. Volunteer club members organize group rides, leaving from various locations throughout Mid-Suffolk and the East End. Their routes provide us a wonderful variety of places to tour and explore. Some months there are 80 or more rides to choose from! Rides can be anywhere from 10 to 100+ miles, with different degrees of difficulty and speed. Therefore, we grade rides by distance, speed, and terrain so you can choose the ones you will be comfortable with. Popular rides tend to be 25 to 50 miles, usually with a lunch or snack stop. Whether your focus is a fast, challenging ride or something more leisurely, come see what fun club riding can be. Our rides are free, and non-members are welcome to come try us out. Monthly MeetingsEveryone is invited to attend our meetings on the first Thursday of each month at the New Village Recreation Center in Centereach (intersection of Wireless Road and Hawkins Road, just east of Nicolls Road [CR97]). Meetings start at 7:30pm. Refreshments and snacks are served. See map. Join SBRAFor information about SBRA Member Benefits and joining SBRA see our Become a Member page. Getting Started: Your First Club RideNewcomers are welcome to try a few rides with us before joining. Just pick a ride from our Ride Calendar and show up! Or, if you prefer, come to one of our meetings, and speak to our ride leaders to get more information. Or e-mail us at Rides@SBRAweb.org. Beginners should start with a "D" level ride. If you're an experienced rider, we recommend that you start at least one ride level below what you think you can handle, and work up. Your bike should be in good mechanical condition with tires properly inflated. Bring a water bottle, spare inner tube, pump, and your insurance ID card (if you have one). If you're thinking of buying a new bike, you might want to get some advice from our "gurus" before making a purchase. Or click here for our suggestions on choosing a bike. And be sure to read our Tips for Riding in a Group. Helmets are required on all SBRA rides. |
